This is jargon for doing a simple search based on your topic by typing it into the database of the largest search engine in the world. The results that display on your screen is generally your first indications of where you might find what you are looking for.
Google is an example of a Search Engine, which is a large database consisting of several computers which run through vast amounts of data to return to you, the user, whatever it is you are looking for. How does it know what you are looking for? Well, it doesn't. That's where you come in.
You must type in specific words and phrases to give these computers a better idea of what to return back to you in its results over the internet. This search engine database, and others like it, will give its best guess as to what you want. If you want to know how to search the internet, search engines are usually the first place to start because of their non-specific nature.
Subject Directories are another type of way one can use to search the internet. These are highly specialized and organized directories on a particular subject. These are created by experts in a particular subject field and are a great source for searching the internet. To find these, you could just type into a search engine the subject matter you are interested in followed by the word "directories" or "web directories". For example, you might enter: "biology web directories" to start your search off to find these subject directories.
Another way of how you could search the internet would be using what are called Meta-Search Engines. In a meta-search engine, you would enter your keywords in its search field and it will transmit your request to several search engines and web pages at the same time. They will parse results for you from all of the search engines and web pages it requested information from, according to your keywords.
These meta-search engines do not own the database web pages but rather send the request to databases owned and maintained by other search engine companies. Surfwax.com is an example of one of the better of these meta-search engines. It uses a group of some of the better search engines available to get results from.
